This special series on “Recent Glaucoma Surgeries” is edited by Dr. Etsuo Chihara, Dr. Keith Barton, Dr. Ronald Fellman, and Dr. Akira Matsuda.

Etsuo Chihara, MD, PhD

Prof. Etsuo Chihara is a distinguished Japanese ophthalmologist. He graduated from Kyoto University and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Kobe Central Municipal Hospital in Hyogo and Kurashiki Central Hospital in Okayama. His academic career commenced in 1977 at Kyoto University, where he earned his PhD in 1982.

Prof. Chihara's academic positions include:

  • Assistant Professor, Miyazaki Medical College (1986)
  • Assistant Professor, Kyoto University (1989)
  • Associate Professor and Vice President, Department of Ophthalmology, Kyoto University (1992)
  • Director, Sensho-kai Eye Institute (since 1993)

He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers in English and more than 30 book chapters. He has been an invited speaker at over 100 national and international conferences and served as the editor of 10 ophthalmology books. Notably, he presented the highest-class glaucoma lecture in Japan, the Suda Memorial Lecture, in 2012 and was elected an Emeritus Member of the Japanese Glaucoma Society in 2015. Prof. Chihara has also received numerous scientific awards.

Keith Barton, MD, FRCP, FRCS
University College London, London, UK

Keith Barton is a Professor of Ophthalmology, University College London, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Glaucoma Specialist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Co-chair of Ophthalmology Futures Forums, and formerly Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

His areas of interest are the surgical management of glaucoma, especially surgical devices and secondary glaucomas, specifically the management of glaucoma in uveitis, for which he runs a dedicated clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He is currently a member of the Primary Tube Versus Trabeculectomy (PTVT) Study Steering Committee, Chief Investigator in the Corneal Ancillary Study to the PTVT Study and a member of the Trial Management Committees of both the NIHR HTA-funded Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma (TAGS) and Lasers in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension (LIGHT) Studies.

Ronald Fellman, MD
Glaucoma Associates of Texas, Dallas, Texas, USA

In his 42nd year as Attending Surgeon and Clinician at Glaucoma Associates of Texas, Ronald Fellman continues to work and innovate in the aqueous outflow space. He completed his residency at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, and fellowship in glaucoma at Wills Eye Hospital.

His American Glaucoma Society (AGS) executive highlights include Secretary, Vice President, and President. He received the first AGS President’s Award in 2003, Surgery Day lecturer in 2018, and the AGS Innovator Award in 2024.

He is coeditor of a recent book entitled “GATT: Gonioscopy Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy: A Guide to Circumnavigating Schlemm’s Canal from Around the World.” (eds Fellman and Grover, Kugler Publications, 2023). When Ron is not thinking about glaucoma or creating music, he is either fly-fishing with his wife, three daughters and son-in-law, or photographing nature.

Akira Matsuda, MD, PhD
Juntendo University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan

Akira Matsuda, MD, PhD is Clinical Professor at Nihon University School of Medicine in Tokyo with clinical foci in ocular atopic diseases and refractory glaucoma treatment. He currently serves as an associate editor of Allergology International, and a board member of Japanese Society of Allergology.
