Research Interest: retina and ocular oncology
Prof. Dr. Kakkassery is the head of the department of ophthalmology at the Klinikum Chemnitz in Germany. His clinical focus is on retina and on ocular oncology. After his medical studies at University of Aachen and Hamburg, he wrote his doctoral thesis on isolating, cultivating and characterization of human limbal stem cells. Further, he has been trained in Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, the Charité University Hospital and University Hospital Essen. After his board examination, he worked at the University Hospital Bochum, Rostock and Lübeck as a consultant with broad surgical duties and the special interest on ocular oncology. After a training as a postdoctoral fellow in molecular biological science on the ocular surface with Prof. Dr. Ilene Gipson at the Schepens Eye Research Institute (Havard Medical School at Boston/USA), he developed his special scientific interest in ocular oncology and received the professor title on this subject.
